How to change jumping up to sitting quietly.
Changing a negative behavior (Jumping Up) to a Positive Behavior (Sitting Quietly) takes practice.
đ« Avoid These Common Mistakes
Pushing the dog down (it feels like play to them).
Yelling âNoâ (still attention).
Letting guests pet them when they jump.
Being inconsistent â some people rewarding sit, others petting the jumping.
đ How Quickly Will This Work?
Most dogs improve significantly within:
3â5 days of consistent practice
2 weeks for solid, reliable behavior
Longer for overly excited or anxious dogs
đŸ Step-by-Step: Replace Jumping With a Quiet Sit
â 1. Remove ALL attention when the dog jumps
Jumping continues because it works â the dog gets eye contact, talking, touching, or pushing.
So when the dog jumps:
:No eye contact, no talking, no pushing them off or reacting.
Gently hold the chin dog by the collar, under the chin, and wait for the dog to settle: No words or commands!
WHEN! the dog has settled, interact with the puppy by eye contact, gentle praise, and soft pets.
đ Do:
Turn your body slightly away - do not knee the dog.
Keep hands up and out of reach - move slowly so hiding hands doesnât become a game.
Stay calm and neutral - only interact verbally or give eye contact if the dog is calm.
This tells the dog:
âJumping = nothing happens.â
If you do NOTHING. The dog will automatically sit.
You do not want to be saying, Sit! Sit! this will re-energize the dog. WAIT! If you do nothing, the dog will automatically sit. THEN give food rewards, quiet âGood, goodâ and soft pets under the chin.o
Wait for the Sit, to offer it on their own
Then reward immediately:
Now the dog learns:
âSitting quietly = attention!â
â 3. Be FAST with your rewards
Have treats ready in one hand and reward them by transferring one treat at time into the empty hand. One treat at a time teaches them to wait and not grab at handful of treats.
â 4. Practice every time you greet the dog
Repeat the same rule in different situations:
When you come home
When you walk into the room
Before you put the leash on
When youâre getting ready for walks
With visitors
Before feeding
Before playing
Consistency = success.
â 5. Train the âDefault Sitâ
This is a magic exercise:
Stand in front of your dog
Say nothing
Wait
When the dog sits â reward
Repeat 10â15 times
Soon, the dog automatically sits whenever they want something.
This is how you build a dog who offers calm behavior without being told.
â 6. Reward Quiet
If your dog whines or barks for attention, wait for:
1 second of quiet
Reward
Gradually increase quiet time
Now your dog learns:
âQuiet + Sit = I get attention.â
